วีรกรรมแห่งประจวบคีรีขันธ์: การป้องกันฐานทัพอากาศในวันที่ญี่ปุ่นบุก
วันที่ 8 ธันวาคม 2484 เป็นวันที่ประวัติศาสตร์ไทยต้องจารึก! ฐานทัพอากาศประจวบคีรีขันธ์ถูกกองทัพญี่ปุ่นบุกโจมตีอย่างหนัก
ทหารไทยนำโดย ม.ล.ประวัติ ชุมสาย มีเพียงกำลังพลไม่ถึง 150 นาย กับอาวุธที่จำกัด แต่ทุกคนรวมใจสู้สุดชีวิต
ญี่ปุ่นยกพลขึ้นบกตั้งแต่เช้ามืด ยึดสถานีโทรเลขและสถานีตำรวจในเมืองอย่างรวดเร็ว ทหารอากาศ นักบิน เจ้าหน้าที่ภาคพื้น ตำรวจ และอาสาสมัครเยาวชน ต้องถอยมารวมกำลังที่ฐานทัพ
นักบินพยายามนำเครื่องบินขึ้นโจมตีข้าศึก แต่ถูกยิงตกเกือบหมด มีเพียงร้อยตรีมานะ ประสงค์ดี ที่บินขึ้นไปได้ แต่เครื่องยนต์ขัดข้องต้องลงจอดฉุกเฉิน
การต่อสู้ดำเนินไปกว่า 30 ชั่วโมง ทหารไทยตั้งจุดยิงบนเนินเขาและแนวป้องกันรอบฐานทัพ ยิงตอบโต้ศัตรูอย่างกล้าหาญ
ญี่ปุ่นเสียชีวิตนับร้อย ขณะที่ไทยเสียชีวิตประมาณ 38-70 นาย ในที่สุดรัฐบาลสั่งหยุดยิง ทหารไทยเผาเอกสารและอาคารสำคัญก่อนยอมจำนน
เหตุการณ์นี้กลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งความกล้าหาญและเสียสละของทหารไทย
ปัจจุบันที่ฐานทัพอากาศนาวีที่ 5 (Wing 5) มีอนุสรณ์สถานรำลึกถึงวีรชนผู้เสียชีวิต พร้อมรูปปั้นและรายชื่อเหล่าทหารกล้า
ทุกปีจะมีพิธีรำลึกถึงความกล้าหาญของพวกเขา — เพื่อให้คนไทยรุ่นหลังได้ระลึกถึงความเสียสละและความรักชาติอย่างแท้จริง
On December 8, 1941, the airbase at Prachuap Khiri Khan became the scene of one of Thailand’s most dramatic acts of resistance.
As Japanese troops landed before dawn, the Thai defenders – led by Wing Commander Mom Luang Prawat Chumsai – had fewer than 150 men and only a handful of heavy and light machine guns.
The Japanese quickly seized key points in town, forcing pilots, ground crew, local police, and even teenage volunteers to regroup at the airbase. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the defenders fought with extraordinary courage.
Pilots attempted to take off and attack the enemy, but most were shot down during takeoff – only Flying Officer Man Prasongdi managed to get airborne, but his engine failed and he was forced to land in Huahin.
For over 30 hours, the Thais held their ground, setting up machine gun nests on Khao Lommuak and other cliffs, repelling wave after wave of Japanese attacks.
The Japanese suffered heavy casualties, with estimates ranging from 200 to 500 dead, while Thai losses were about 38 to 70 men. Eventually, the Thai government ordered a ceasefire. Before surrendering, the defenders burned sensitive documents and buildings to prevent their capture.
Today, this battle is remembered as a symbol of Thai bravery and sacrifice. At Wing 5 Airbase, a monument stands in honor of the fallen defenders, with statues and plaques listing the names of those who gave their lives. Every year, ceremonies are held to remember their courage and to inspire future generations to cherish the spirit of patriotism and sacrifice.
